In a game where the wind blew heavily to one end of the ground, Melbourne kicked the only goal of the first quarter into the breeze. They consolidated the advantage in the second quarter by keeping the Dockers scoreless. Freo closed the gap to under a goal at three quarter time before Melbourne again held them scoreless against the wind to qualify for the Preliminary Final.
