North Melbourne win by 12 points
Goalkickers: Gerard Healy 5, Robert Flower 2, Dave McGlashan 2, Stephen McCarthy 1
In a scrappy and occasionally violent game, North moved into the night series semi final at Melbourne's expense. A goalless first quarter put the Demons on the back foot, and after getting to 10 points behind at half time they only managed one goal in the third term as North took the advantage with five goals. The Kangaroos should have had another one but a goal was missed by a goal umpire who was busy trying to break up a fight.
At the start of the last quarter the Demons were 37 points behind but mounted a spirited comeback to fall just 12 points short. The last term was the reverse of the third, with Melbourne kicking five goals to one. The Demons got within ten points, but North steadied to win.
The Demons received $15,000 for making the quarter finals.
Best were Healy, Fidge and McGlashan.
