1877 July Match vs Ballarat

Monday 2 July - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: About 1,600

Melbourne 3
Ballarat 0 (half time 2-0)

Melbourne win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: Fred Baker, Charles Baker, Louis Suhard 1

For the first time a temporary fence was erected to try and keep fans from wandering onto the field. The measures were mostly successful even though the spectators only needed to to climb over a small hurdle to get onto the pitch.

Melbourne won the toss and kicked with the win to the Jolimont End. They had their first chance after ten minutes when F. Baker marked 40 yards from goal, but his kick was terrible and he failed to score. Seconds later though he recieved a pass from a teammate and converted for the opening score of the match.

Several Melbourne players kicked for goal in the next few minutes, but none succeeded until C. Baker took a pass from Longden and converted from 10 yards out without even going back to take his kick. Ballarat twice got into an attacking position but failed to convert and the locals went into the long break two goals to the good.

The visitors had the use of the wind in the second half, but cruelly it died down soon after the restart. The Reds almost immediately went on the attack, and the handful of attacking chances that Ballarat had were quickly snuffed out. At the other end F. Baker had numerous shots on goal but missed them all. Eventually Suhard got the third and that was the extent of the scoring.

James Bennie, John Booth and Bob Sillett were best.
