The 1972 Morrish and 1973 Gardiner Medal winner made his senior debut in that year's Grand Final. He didn't have a happy day and failed to play a senior game game in 1974.

After returning to the Blues squad in 1975 he found a place in the seniors over the next two years. Seeking a change of scenery he moved to Subiaco in the WAFL, and topped their goalkicking, but moved back to Carlton in 1978. In his absence he lost his spot, and spent the majority of the next few years in the Reserves until the Blues cleared him to Melbourne as part payment for the transfer of Greg Wells.

Despite a promising start the Demons, Catoggio played just nine games over two years. Early in 1982 he was demoted to Melbourne's supplementary list and only managed one game for the rest of the year. Interest during the year from Collingwood never translated in a move, he then moved to Sydney in 1983, before joining VFA side Prahran in 1984 after the Swans dumped him that pre-season. After his football career ended he became a painter. Later played for Yarra Glen.
