Turner debuted in the WAFL as a 19-year-old, crossing to Melbourne in 1985 despite suffering a serious knee injury during 1984.

After transferring to Victoria for work, the 25-year-old joined the Demons for a $60,000 transfer fee. He sought the move after being told by Perth coach Mal Brown that he wasn’t a required player, and was signed by Melbourne on the recommendation of ex-teammate Alan Johnson. Turner spent two seasons with Melbourne but missed time in 1987 with a knee injury, he returned in the Round 22 victory which sealed Melbourne's first finals appearance since 1964 but reinjured his right knee and missed the finals.

Turner then crossed to St Kilda for 1988, where he played six games in each of his two seasons. His first year with the club ended with another knee injury after playing the opening six rounds. He returned for a season at Perth in 1990.

Appointed Swan Districts coach in 2003, he led them to the their first finals appearance since 1993 the next year. He resigned five games into 2007.
