Saturday September 12 - Warehouseman's Ground
Melbourne 1.6, 1.6, 4.7, 4.7
Carlton 0.3, 3.10, 3.10, 4.16
Match drawn
Goalkickers: Smith 2, McKenzie 1, Griffiths 1
In front of a large crowd a strong wind bottled the game up in one corner of the ground. Melbourne had the wind in the first quarter and had seven shots on goal but only managed a single major.
Carlton used the breeze fully to their advantage in the second by kicking three goals to nil. Their goals would be decisive, as Melbourne would hit the lead in the third quarter with three goals of their own but concede one in the last to draw the match.
Melbourne ran out of legs and Carlton played over the top of them for the whole last quarter but kicked poorly for goal. For a late season game, the match was played in a surprisingly spiteful manner. Only one Carlton player was reported, and was let off with a reprimand.
Best were McKenzie, Christy and Fry.
