Saturday 9 September - Melbourne Ground
Melbourne 1
Richmond 0 (half time 0-0)
Melbourne win by 1 goal
Goalkicker: Ernest Harrison 1
Melbourne played with 15 against Richmond's 20. The visitors kicked with a strong wind at first, but Melbourne still managed to have their goal under siege. The ball rarely got beyond halfway and Melbourne kicked several behinds without breaking through for a major.
Eventually Melbourne began to tire from their short-handed efforts on a large ground and Richmond began to launch some attacks, but most of the time they were easily turned back.
After half-time Melbourne had the use of the wind, and eventually Ernest Harrison scored a place kick from 50 yards out to give his side the lead. For most of the remainder of the match the ball was in front of Richmond's goal and their opponents were never in danger of surrendering their lead.
