Another weekend with cold winds and rain affected scoring, and after a series of creditable performances without winning the Demons narrowly went under again. Collingwood was better suited to the conditions, with their small men handling the ball well in the conditions. They didn't have it all their own way but the home side couldn't sustain occasional challenges. They tried to attack around the relatively dry Members' side wing, but too dependent on forward Bob McKenzie in the muddy conditions it took them 45 minutes to score.

Three goals before half time cut the margin to nine, before Collingwood kicked away again with the only four goals of the last quarter. Melbourne's defence held up well but their forwards registered just four points against the wind all day. With the wind in the last quarter they more than doubled their score, and three goals in five minutes kept the game alive. Collingwood had one played carried off and another noticeably injured, and when Stuart Spencer twice goalled from close range the margin was seven before Collingwood steadied to win.

Best were Beckwith, Williams and Arnold. Gloury and Thomson were unused 19th and 20th men.
