With their finals spot secured but their position in the top two still vulnerable, the Demons travelled to Glenferrie and narrowly avoided a storming comeback by the home side after dominating all day.
The Demons jumped to an early lead by kicking 3.1 before the Hawks scored anything, with forward was Athol Webb the best player early. Hawthorn fought back in the second but still trailed by 17 points at the long break. They kicked two early goals in the third quarter to slash the margin to four points, before the Demons responded with a seven goal quarter to go into the last break 30 points in front.
The margin reached 33 points and the Demons seemed home, but for the second time they relaxed after a burst of goals. Hawthorn fought back again and cut the gap to a goal. They kicked five goals in 15 minutes to get within a goal before Ian McLean sealed the game.
Best for the Demons as they made sure of a double chance were McLean, Webb and Williams. Tunbridge (thigh) was replaced by Crompton and Mithen (corked leg) by Jones in the last quarter.
