After conceding a record Round 1 score to Essendon on their own turf Melbourne's season had never recovered and they remained only a mathematical chance of making the four even after taking revenge in the rematch. Essendon had also been in poor form, only snapping a five game losing streak the week before.
They had to recover from a 25 point deficit at half time, having wasted a 16 scoring shot first quarter by only manging four goals then failing to score at all in the second. 6.8 in the third put them back in front, and they managed to hold the home side scoreless at the scoring end in the final term to win. It left Melbourne two games and percentage outside the four.
Melbourne's best was Glass. Ball was 19th man.
