Both Essendon and Melbourne needed a win to strengthen their claims to a top four position entering the midway point of the season, and after a strong performance in almost toppling Collingwood a week earlier they held on to win in the face of a strong comeback by the home side.

A violent wind blew across the ground, and both teams were inaccurate. Essendon kicked one goal from six attempts in the first quarter, and when the game was there to be one in the last term they kicked 2.4.

Best was La Fontaine. Melbourne's win lifted them to sixth, above St Kilda on percentage.

Image During the match the club organised a prize for 'best barracker', with stewards in the crowd judging supporters on their witty and apt criticisms but taking points off them for insulting remarks against the umpires.
