Represented the VFL against a Ballarat league side in 1898.

Initially expected to miss 1899 after moving out of Melbourne, Herring played 13 games. He only appeared twice in 1900 after moving to the Maryborough area, but they were both winning finals - including Melbourne's first premiership. In 1901 he missed the entire season until the last game where secretary Amos Norcott coerced him to come back as a replacement for the ill George Moodie.

In 1902 he moved back to the city to study and was able to play close to a full season for the first time since 1899, as well as playing for Trinity College in a collegiate match.

Herring was also a talented cricketer, playing around Maryborough in 1898 and in the city the next year.
