Coming off a wooden spoon in the first year of the Bob Skilton era, the Demons started the season brightly but faded to improve just two positions on their 1974 performance.

For the first time the club’s coffers were bolstered by a sponsorship team. A company that produced well-known food brands was controlled by a family of Melbourne supporters, and in exchange for their donation were provided with signage at the MCG and logos on player apparel.

In the pre-season, Melbourne was runner-up to Essendon in a charity Footy Olympics competition. The team included Graham Osborne (2nd in the 100m sprint), Robert Flower (winner of 1500m steeplechase and ball race), Stan Alves (second in 1500m steeplechase), Wayne Delmenico (third in 1600 metre race and second in 800 metres), Peter Keays (800 metres winner),

A night series was proposed by Channel 7 shortly before the season began, but did not take place when only five of 12 clubs voted in favour of the concept. Melbourne was one of the seven to vote against. Later in the year they were the only club in favour of a lightning premiership to be hosted by the MCC on the Preliminary Final day when a game was being played at Waverley. The idea foundered on lack of interest.

At the end of the season the club complained about the staged nature of the Brownlow Medal count, which was set up to have Gary Dempsey pass Stan Alves in the last vote of the night. The same scenario happened to Greg Wells in 1972 and Gary Hardeman in 1974.

The club lost $27,827 for the year.
