In the second quarter Richmond had all the attacking but only managed 0.5 for a half-time score of nine behinds and still trailed by Melbourne's first half goal.

In the last quarter it looked as if Richmond might have kicked themselves out of the game, but they scored goals in the last quarter to take the points. The first game shortly after the restart, and a second soon followed. Melbourne equalled through Smith but late in the game Richmond kicked the winner.
