Carlton 1
Melbourne 0 (half time 1-0)
Carlton win by 1 goal
After five wins in a row to start the season Melbourne took on their great rivals for the first time, and kicked with a breeze during the first half. The wet and slippery conditions made it difficult for them to score and Carlton managed to score the first goal at the 30 minute mark.
Melbourne then switched their attack from the left wing to the right, and Towle narrowly missed scoring the equaliser. Melbourne only managed two behinds for the rest of the half.
When the second half started crowd encroachment had cut the playing field to a width of 50-60 yards, and Ben Goldsmith - the captain on the day - missed an easy chance early in the half. Freeman and Bennie also missed chances to level the scores. W. Williams then had a shot whch was stopped on the line.
With Melbourne attacking strongly Carlton began to waste time, and they managed to run out the clock and earn their fifth win in a row against Melbourne.
Best were C. Carr, J. Bennie and Sillett.
