After getting through 1868 without a loss, Melbourne fell in their first game for the season against a senior side. Carlton won the toss but had not wind advantage to the selected end. The home side had the better of the early exchanges but were unable to break through Carlton's defence.
The visitors had the advantage in marking and gathering the ball, and while Melbourne fought hard Carlton kicked the first goal after 70 minutes of play. After play restarted, Carlton got the crucial second goal. The match was to be determined on total goals, so play continued until failing light caused the end of play.
Henry Harrison (captain), Charles Forrester and Tom Hepburn were Melbourne's best.
