From: Carey Grammar/Melbourne, Selection #27, 1989 Pre-Season Draft

A former member of a Hawthorn junior squad Tomkins had already won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1986 and had appeared in the 1988 Seoul Games when Melbourne drafted him.

Tomkins played Reserves wearing number 32, but football didn't work out and he returned to rowing where he found more fame as a member of the Oarsome Foursome Olympic gold medal winning team.

Draft records show Tomkins being drafted from 'Melbourne', but it's more likely that he was unattached to any team at draft time.
