Ruckman who moved from South Melbourne to Richmond after one game, playing another three before World War I temporarily halted his career.

Cleared from Prahran to Melbourne before the 1919 season, Matthews played four years before being dropped from the list before 1923 and returning to South Melbourne. In 1925 he joined Benalla as playing coach.

His son Norm also played for Melbourne and South, also Matthews' son would win a Brownlow Medal for South Melbourne and his grandson Herbie later played for Melbourne.
