Debuting with the Reds in 1893, Wardill remained with the club throughout its early VFL years but also filled in with his old side Alberton in 1895. He was one of the best afield in the shock 1900 Grand Final triumph.
He retired after three games of 1901, but returned the next season to play the first three games of the year again.
In 1924 he appeared in an 'old players' charity game aged 52.
Played for the VFL in a game against Ballarat in June 1900.
