August 1874 match vs St Kilda

Saturday 1 August - St Kilda

St Kilda 0
Melbourne 0

Match drawn

Less than a month earlier, Melbourne had put five goals past St Kilda, but in the rematch they were unable to score any. They began with 18 players but were soon back to the standard 20, albeit without several of their best side.

Even with the wind in the first half, the Reds were unable to break through. On a slippery ground, the wind may have favoured their goal but it was blowing in a way that ensured the ball was out of bounds most of the time. After 15 minutes Bell got what looked like the opened, but the ball was deemed to have touched a player on the way through. The other solid chance fell to Kneen late in the half, who tried to pass to a teammate but missed.

After the break St Kilda got the ball forward and Melbourne were unable to clear it over half-way. Heavy rain further added to their misery and neither side scored.

Best were Byrne, Oliver and Johnson.
