Saturday 22 August - Princes Park, Maryborough
Maryborough 0
Melbourne 5 (half time 0-3)
Melbourne win by 5 goals
Goalkickers: Angus Cumming 3, Ben Goldsmith 1, Austin Loughnan 1
The sides played with 19 each, and Melbourne's ranks were boosted by Aitken from Castlemaine. The team from the Maryborough district had been practising together in anticipation of the match and were hopeful of victory but were beaten comfortably.
Melbourne kicked with a strong wind in the first half, and while Maryborough had the first attack and registed a behind the visitors opened the scoring through Cumming in the first five minutes. The same player extended the lead after half an hour, before a third from Goldsmith gave the visitors a handy lead at the break.
The home side fared little better in the second half, the effort exerted to stay in touch against the wind saw them fail to score any with it. They conceded two goals into the breeze and never threatened.
Best were Aitken, Moore and McArthur.
