North Melbourne win by 2 points
Goalkickers: Jeremy Howe 2, Jesse Hogan 1, Dean Kent 1, Jack Watts 1
Melbourne's first hit-out for the year saw them fall short just of coming back to beat the Kangaroos, though without North's nine point goal the Demons would have actually won.
Jack Watts kicked Melbourne's first goal of the year in the first half, but while the Demons impressed at times - especially youngster Jesse Hogan who kicked his first goal for the club - they were kept at arm's length by North for most of the match. It wasn't until the last minutes when Melbourne challenged on the back of two consecutive Jeremy Howe set shot goals.
With 15 seconds left Dean Kent marked, but instead of handballing off to a running player to try and kick the 'supergoal' and give the Demons a first up win he opted for a traditional shot on goal. He kicked it but time expired and North won.
Best were Jones, McKenzie and Hogan.
