Carlton win by 37 points

Goalkickers: David Neitz 4, David Schwarz 2, Shane Woewodin 2, Russell Robertson 2, Jeff Farmer 2, Troy Longmuir 2, Travis Johnstone 1, Guy Rigoni 1, James McDonald 1

Melbourne jumped to a 40 point lead at the first change, and extended the margin to 41 before collapsing. Carlton put on a 12.7 to 0.1 last quarter, overturning the deficit and going on to win comfortably. The first five goals of the last quarter came within 15 minutes, and after taking the lead the Blues added another three in the last five minutes.

Neale Daniher said he was "pretty happy with three quarters", and attributed the fade-out to hot weather.

Best were Woewodin, Neitz and Chisholm. Stephen Tingay was rested after half time.

Todd Viney played a half in the reserves, while Garry Lyon was a late withdrawal after pulling up sore on the car trip from Melbourne.
