Crowd: 5000

Melbourne 0.2, 3.4, 5.4, 6.8
Collingwood 0.2, 1.2, 4.3, 4.3

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Wilson 2, McCulloch 2, McCarthy 1, Wardill 1

Melbourne were all but out of the running for the flag, but they dealt Collingwood's hopes a blow with a surprise win. The visitors started with the breeze, but the Reds were the better side early. They were unlucky not to register a goal when first McGinis hit the post, then McCulloch missed from a few metres out.

When they had their chance with the breeze the home side kicked three goals to one, despite the time-wasting tactics of their opponents as they tried to get out of the quarter as best possible. The game was quickly levelled in the third quarter, before a late goal gave Melbourne a buffer entering the last. Collingwood didn't score again, and their nine game winning streak was over.

Best were McGinis, O'Dwyer and Wilson.
