The son of 1989 Brownlow Medallist Paul Couch came under the eye of Mark Neeld in his final season at Collingwood and Couch was invited to train under the new coach at Melbourne, eventually being selected with the Demons' second overall choice in the Rookie Draft.

Initally overlooked after his 2006 season with the Geelong Falcons, Couch played with the Geelong VFL side, St. Jospeh's, Woodville-West Torrens, Glenelg, Bell Park and Collingwood VFL before being drafted at 23 years old and making his debut late in 2012.

Received a one year contract extension after playing three matches in his first season, but failed to play another season match the next season and was subsequently delisted. He returned to the Collingwood VFL side in 2014, and was with Richmond Reserves in 2015.

Took over as North Launceston playing coach in 2017 and won a premiership in his first season. He then joined Casey Demons as a playing assistant coach for 2018. Worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Richmond and Collingwood, and as a high performance manager with professional tennis players before joining the Carlton AFLW program for 2023.
