Thomas served in the First World War from May 1918 until the conflict ended. The half-back flanker then played for VFA side Oakleigh, before joining Melbourne in 1921. Thomas represented the VFL against the Ballarat League in his first season. He played every game in 1922, but missed eight games due to suspension in 1923 and only played three matches.
Returning to his best in 1924, Thomas was made vice-captain and played for the VFL against a Bendigo league team. He later represented the VFL again in 1927 against a Wimmera League combination. Thomas was one of the key contributors to the 1926 Grand Final victory, and he played two more seasons before returning to Oakleigh in 1929.
After three years - including two VFA premierships - Thomas rejoined Melbourne in 1932 and played one season, after which he returned to Oakleigh for a third time to coach their Seconds.
Thomas served in the First World War from May 1918 until the conclusion of the conflict. His grandson Leon Baker played 86 games for Essendon between 1984 and 1988.
