The Grand Final rematch of 1948 involved two clubs who were well down from their form of the previous year. Melbourne had enjoyed a rocky 2-4 start to the new year, while Essendon were barely holding on to their spot in the four on percentage.

Even Melbourne's wins had been poor, and Essendon had the perfect chance to exact revenge for their loss in the replayed Grand Final but they tired in the last quarter and allowed the Demons to run over the top for their first win at Windy Hill in a decade.

Melbourne's best were the Cordner brothers - Don in the ruck and Denis in defence. Dockett and Bickford were also prominent in a strong midfield performance. Bickford also injured his shoulder.
