Geelong had been poor at the start of the season but due to the holiday a number of their fans travelled to the city to watch them play and were rewarded with victory over the struggling Reds.

The visitors took the lead in the first quarter and never surrendered it, but at one point during the last term Melbourne got to within a point. Geelong seemed safe at three-quarter time when they led by 16 points, but two goals in a row cut the lead to three. They had more chances but couldn't convert a major to get in front.

Best were Purse, Strong and Bowe.

Notes
Conquest may not have played. He is noted as being out injured in a news article, then misses several weeks after this game.
