The Demons season went from bad to worse when they were thrashed by the old enemy at Victoria Park. The first two games of the season had seen Melbourne put in a promising first half before falling in a whole, but this time they didn't even get a chance to start before the Magpies blew them away.

Six goals down at quarter time the Demons stemmed the bleeding in the second quarter, but given that they were kicking with the same strong breeze that the Pies had destroyed them with they failed to use it effectively and were never any closer.

Best were Townsend, Rollinson and Bourke. Davis (leg) was replaced by Rowlands in the third quarter and Lakes (ankle) by Emselle at three quarter time.
