Melbourne's second win of the season came in the face of a strong comeback during the last quarter by a side who would go on to win just one game for the season. The Reds had been forced to replace the ill Kennedy with Abbott - in his only game for the club - and they started slowly.
University were the better side early on, but missed several good opportunities on goal and went in behind due to Melbourne making the most of their chances. The visitors were handling the ball far better than their opponents, but their kicking and passing was terrible. They were assisted by the poor kicking of the home side, who added just five points in the second quarter.
By three quarter time the lead was 23 points, and University came home with a wet sail. The attack repeatedly and cut the lead to eight, but couldn't get any closer.
Bill McKenzie collapsed after the match after suffering a heavy fall, but he recovered to play the next week.
Best were Tomkins, McKenzie and Robertson. Francis suffered an ankle injury. Harris played with a poisoned finger.
