Needing to win every game left in the season to qualify for the finals, the Demons came up against a side in exactly the same position that they were in and it was the Cats who stayed alive.
With top eight hopes as good as dead and buried, one of the main reasons for Melbourne fans to turn up was to farewell champion Garry Lyon who had recently retired. He addressed the troops before the match but the side, led out by David Neitz in Todd Viney's absence, showed just why they had struggled in '99.
Geelong took the lead in the third quarter, and while they were never comfortably in front they edged away to an easy win in a poor standard match. The Sunday Herald Sun summed up the game by saying "If you missed it, be glad because it was awful. Truly awful".
Best were Neitz, Schwarz and Hopgood.
