The Demons went into the last day of the home and away season as the only side in the top five who could be certain of a berth in the finals. The only question was whether they could win and make sure of the minor premiership.

They had no problems, running away from the Swans in the first quarter and winning comfortably despite yet another inaccurate performance in front of goal. Matched up against Swans full-back Fred Goldsmith - who went on to win the Brownlow Medal - Athol Webb was the worst offender, kicking 4.9 from 15 shots.

With their weak forward line well beaten it was South's worst score since 1939, and Melbourne's largest winning margin against them since the same year.

Best were Webb, Williams and Cordner. Spencer and Barassi were replaced by Adams and Wilson respectively when suffering from cramp. McMahen received a slight concussion.
