Having just racked up their first win in eleven months Melbourne stuck with Essendon for most of the day before succumbing in the last quarter. Carl Ditterich had sat on the bench for most of the day recovering from injury before being unleashed in the last term but he couldn't make a difference.
As always the Demons lacked a key forward target and had to rely on midfielders and rovers to kick their goals.
Best were Wells, Brewer and Giampaolo. Delmenico was replaced by Clark in the third quarter and Baker by Ditterich at three quarter time.
