With heavy showers falling throughout the day it was not fine conditions for football, but nevertheless on their own turf Melbourne got 40 points closer than they had in the previous meeting between the sides during 1903.

Despite the horrible conditions the two sides put on an fast and interesting game, albeit one where Geelong were the far superior side. Both sides picked up the ball as if they were playing on a dry day, but the visitors had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first term. They made far better use of it than Melbourne did in the second, the 25 point margin at quarter time almost accounting for the entire gap between the sides at the final bell.

Melbourne started the third quarter brightly and attacked several times but could only manage behinds and eventually failed to add a major for the entire term. They crowded the play to try and slow Geelong down but the tactic backfired as the opposition goalled from a counter attack.

Two goals early in the last quarter cut the gap and put some interest back into the game but Geelong kicked another goal shortly after to steady his side's nerves.

Best were Langley, Moodie and Tout.

Notes
The attendance is reported as "several hundred".
