Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: David Christy 1, Graham 1, Fry 1, O'Dwyer 1, O'Loughlan 1

Melbourne arrived 20 minutes late for the first match of the season, and the delay may have been in their favour as the kept the home side scoreless for the first term.

Both sides were fielding a number of new players and despite having nine new faces Melbourne were the stronger side, but they still found it hard to penetrate the St. Kilda defence. They peppered the goals without any joy until David Christy finally kicked truly from 45 yards.

The game opened up in the second quarter and Melbourne kicked 2.2 to 1.1. They still had a two goal lead at the half-time break. Soon enough in the third term the home team had drawn level. O'Dwyer put Melbourne back in front just before the three-quarter time bell.

Despite the close nature of the game it was described as the disappointment of the day, descending into a serious of scrambles and scrimmages. Melbourne's goalkicking cost them, with McCarthy, Roche and Harry Graham having around six chances each for onely one goal.

Still, St. Kilda were kicking with the wind but unfortunately for them it dropped off by the term the last term started. They equalised quickly but after that they were run over. Melbourne could only add one more goal through O'Loughlin but it was good enough to take the points.

Bet were Christy, Moysey and Massey.
