May 1889 match vs Carlton

Saturday 11 May - MCG
Crowd: 5000-7000

Carlton 2.0, 3.4, 4.4, 5.7
Melbourne 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.1

Carlton win by 4 goals

Goalkicker: J. Benson 1

A strong northerley wind blew across the ground, causing the games around Melbourne to be confined to one end. It didn't help the Reds to have two quarters with the wind in their favour as they were terrible all day.

Before the game Alex McKenzie announced he would join whichever team won, and though he was the only Melbourne player to excel on the day the Reds were easily beaten and he moved to Carlton immediately.

The Blues got first goal soon after the start, and had a second soon after. This sparked Melbourne into better play, but they were unable to break through Carlton's defence for the entire first half. Benson finally got his side's first goal in the third quarter, but by then the game was long lost.

Notes
Some sources have Melbourne on 0.1 at three quarter time
