Originally selected by Port Adelaide with pick #15 of the 1997 Pre-Season draft, the brother of Geelong premiership player Brad was selected by Melbourne at the end of that year.

He made his debut in the Reserves in 1998 but suffered a left knee injury in the middle of the season and missed the rest of the year.

Ottens made his first appearance in the firsts in the opening match of 1999 and played four matches in a row before being dropped. Weeks later he seriously injured his right knee in a reserves game at Princes Park and did not play another senior match.

He returned from his injury to play for Sandringham but then injured his other knee in June 2000 and was delisted after which he returned to Glenelg. He remained there for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
