The older brother of Geelong premiership player Brad Ottens made his SANFL debut with Glenelg in 1995, and was selected by Port Adelaide with pick #16 of the 1997 Pre-Season draft. He didn't play for Port, and at the end of the year was redrafted by Melbourne.
Ottens underwent groin surgery after being drafted, then played Reserves in 1998 before a left knee injury in the middle of the year ended his season. He made his senior debut in the opening match, playing four matches in a row before being dropped. Weeks later he seriously injured his right knee in a reserves game at Princes Park and did not play another senior game. After returning he injured his other knee while playing for Sandringham in June 2000 and was delisted. He returned to Glenelg and remained there for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
