Saturday 5 June - MCG
Crowd: 10,000 - 15,000
Melbourne 1.5
Carlton 5.12 (Half time 1.4-2.3)
Carlton win by 4 goals
Goalkicker: W. Longden 1
One of the largest crowds ever to see a game of Australian Football saw the home side suffer their first loss of the season. The MCC had been forced to graze 2,000 sheep across the ground before the match to get the ground into suitable condition and Melbourne prepared for the game with extra training but after kicking the first goal with the wind through Longden after 20 minutes they failed to add another one and were beaten comfortably.
Carlton equalised at the 20 minute mark, and in spite of the soft turf the two sides put on a quality game. Melbourne showed a fresh determination after conceding the goal, but conceded a second goal not long afterwards.
The last two Carlton goals were unlucky and came from Melbourne players slipping, but they were beaten comfortably in the end.
Best were Aitken, Lamrock and Nash.
