Carlton were two men short for the first hour, but played with such vigour that they kept the Melbourne side out. The Reds were also without a man, and were unable to take advantage of 15 minutes of pressure at the start of the game.

Melbourne was again the better side in the second half, spending the last 30 minutes before darkness camped in front of their attacking goal and attacking furiously. In one of the most exciting matches of the season, the big crowd caused a number of problems by slowly encroaching into the field of play until one corner of the ground saw players and supporters mixing.
