June 1870 match vs South Yarra

Saturday 25 June - Melbourne Ground

Melbourne 1
South Yarra 0 (half time 1-0)

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkicker: Thomas 1

Neither club had its best squad due to the competing attraction of a high profile foot race, and the match was played as 15-a-side. South Yarra won the toss, opting to kick into a slight breeze and with the sun in their eyes. The home side immediately went on the attack, and got the opening goal from a scrimmage 30 minutes in.

After the goal play alternated between the ends of the ground before half time. From the resumption of play Melbourne only narrowly missed two opportunities to double the lead. South Yarra could never find an equaliser and the home side won.

Best were Byrne and Hope.
