The match wasn't expected to be played due to bad weather, but even though it started given the difficult conditions the match only lasted 90 minutes before play was suspended. Melbourne included a number of players from their Second 20 squad.

With many people crowding the ground to catch a running race taking place on the MCG proper several players collided with spectators.
