Saturday 8 July - MCG
Melbourne 2.3, 4.5, 5.10, 7.15
North Melbourne 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0
Melbourne win by 7 goals
Goalkickers: Smith 2, Roche 2, O'Dea 1, G. Sheahan 1, Wilson 1
The game failed to capture the imagination of sports fans, who had the counter-attractions of an Essendon vs Geelong game and race meeting. Those who did attend saw North suffer the indignity of not registering any score. They had lost their captain to retirement before the match, and the new man in charge suffered a baptism of fire as Melbourne tore his team apart.
Melbourne won the toss and kicked with the breeze, immediately opening the scoring. They had a two goal gap at the first change, with North lucky to keep out a third just before the bell. It didn't take long after the restart for Roche to kick his second, as the Reds pounded away at the visitors' goal. They were restricted to one goal in the third term, but by the end of the game almost every player in Melbourne's lineup had taken a shot during the afternoon.
Best were Howes, F. Sheahan and Moysey.
