North Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Carroll 1, R. Kelly 1

The match was played in poor conditions, and North were the far better side in the first half as they scored one goal in each quarter to take a handy lead. Without key players in Ramsay, Fry and Neill, Melbourne struggled early and the first goal came when the ball bounced through Massey's legs in defence.

The Reds improved their game in the third quarter, and had a late rally in the fourth but it was too late to avert defeat.

Best were Carroll, Griffiths and Sheahan. Carroll was knocked out in a collision.
