Saturday 20 July - MCG
Melbourne 0.1, 0.1, 0.4, 1.4
Essendon 2.1, 6.6, 7.8, 11.15
Essendon win by 10 goals
Goalkicker: Langridge 1
Another week, another big loss for the Reds in their futile 1889 campaign.
Essendon lost the toss, but it hardly matters as they kept the ball at the Melbourne end for almost the entire first quarter. The home side were only allowed to score one behind at the end of the quarter.
The domination continued apace in the second, with Essendon piling on four goals to no score. They slowed to one goal in the third before piling on another four to one in the last. Melbourne were a better side in the second half but were still no match for their opponents. Langridge kicked Melbourne's only major shortly before the end of play.
Despite the loss they remained above Williamstown and the winless Footscray on the ladder by virtue of having beaten Footscray three times.
Best were Kelly, Strachan and Sheehan.
