South Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: C. Power 1, McKenzie 1, Longden 1

The two sides clashes for the second time during July - and the third time in just over a month - and the result was a second loss for Melbourne. Their winless streak against senior sides now stretched to eight.

In a big change from their match against Essendon the previous Saturday the conditions were fine for football, and Melbourne regained their captain Rannard.

Melbourne scored first with two behinds, but Ulbrick botched a golden opportunity to register the first major, and after a third behind in the first 10 minutes South goalled with their first attack. They maintained the advantage to half time and added two more going into the break.

The poor performance of the visitors after the first 10 minutes led most to believe that they would be overwhelmed in the second period, but Melbourne surprised South by dominating the opening few minutes. Sloman and Stiffe both had shots on the goal that resulted in behinds, before C. Power and McKenzie both registered goals. The equaliser was then found through a goalmouth scramble and the match was level.

Losing their three goal lead encouraged South, and they went back in front immediately from the kick off. A minute later they booted another and the match was over.

Best were McKenzie, Booth and Aitken.
