Signed by Sydney from Riverina town Leeton in 1989, the former junior national discus champion made his AFL debut in 1990. He remained at the Swans until the end of 1994, playing in three wooden spoons. After two games in 1994 he dropped a sheet of glass on his foot while doing home renovations, cutting a tendon that put him out for four weeks. More injuries meant he didn't play another game and he finished the year in Sydney's Reserves. Nettelberg then moved to Fremantle for their inaugural season but didn't play a game. During his time with the Dockers he had trouble with injuries, and was meant to play for their senior side before a car accident the day before the game put him out. When fit, Nettelbeck played with WAFL side East Perth.
After leaving Fremantle, Nettelbeck trained with West Coast in the 1996 pre-season, but Melbourne beat them to picking him in the pre-season draft. A year later he played in a fourth career wooden spoon team, and missed almost half the year season with shoulder and back injuries, undergoing surgery on the troublesome shoulder at the end of the season. He played 17 Reserves games in 1998 but couldn't break into a much improved side. He joined the Western Bulldogs in 1999 but a pre-season knee injury ended his career. Nettelbeck later became an accredited player agent.
