In the biggest game the clubs had played for years, Melbourne started better and put considerable stress on Carlton's defence in the opening minutes. They opened a handy lead, converting three goals from 10 shots. In the second quarter the visitors shut off Melbourne's run, and their ruck division started to take over. They were back to just one goal behind at the break.

The Reds were wasteful in the the third quarter, missing four opportunities while Carlton kicked two straight goals. In the last quarter the Blues put on another three goals to one for a comfortable win.
