South had gone much of the season undefeated before falling into a form slump which ultimately saw them defeated by a much weaker Melbourne team. The game was played in a strong wind while restricted play to the south-eastern boundary. Melbourne missed a chance early in the second quarter when wind held the ball up, but the eagerness of the South backmen to try and force a score left their goal undefended and Christy was able to kick his second. He registered a third after half time, the only major of the third quarter.
Best were Christy, Kelly and McKenzie.
