Neither side went into the game at full-strength with Melbourne three or four players down on return from a tour through Tasmania and St Kilda missing five. Tuckfield captained the home side and his team attacked first but Lynar missed a shot on goal.

After further missed opportunities they got the first goal of the day through Griffiths and by quarter time had opened up a 3-0 lead. Bailey intercepted a bad kick by an opponent for the second and Lynar got the third with a running shot.

Early in the second quarter play continued at Melbourne's end before St Kilda got their first goal of the day. Melbourne responded with two through Morris to take a commanding lead into half time.

The visitors failed to register any shots on goal in the second, while Melbourne extended their lead through Wiseman. With the game played out in the last quarter Melbourne slackened off and allowed St Kilda to play the better football for the first time all day.

Best were Lynar, Morris and Griffiths.
