August 1883 match vs Hotham

Saturday 18 August - Hotham Recreation Reserve

Hotham 3.15 (half time 0.2-2.7)
Melbourne 0.3

Hotham win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: Nil

The Reds suffered their third defeat in a row, but had some excuse in that they had to replace crucial players Collins, Conway and Booth with members of the Second 20. Hotham did not have their best side on the park either, but they had an advantage in size and were on their home soil.

Hotham had the advantage of a slight wind and opened up a two goal lead at the long break. It took until the home side were two goals in front before Melbourne rallied and made concerted attacks on the Hotham goal. Jones might have had a goal from 20 yards out but missed his kick.

The home side got their third and final goal from a place kick not long after the restart, and added several more behinds to run out easy winners.

Best were McKenzie, Jones and Sloman.
